The island of Lipari, known in Greek as Meligunis, is the largest of the Aeolian archipelago and has nearly 10,000 habitants.
The soil of the island is volcanic in origin: tufa, obsidian and pumice, and its coasts are characterized by cliffs from the water edge and numerous pointed rocks that face one another. The old, emergent rocks rose up around 225.000 years ago and volcanic phenomena nowadays is limited to modest smoker activity and the presence of hot water springs, such as the thermal springs of “Stufe di San Calogero.”
Immediately perceivable upon arrival is the fortified citadel and the city, seated in the old Franciscan monastery.  By foot one can find the two most noted bays: Marina Corta, with the church of the “Anime del Purgatorio” and the seventeenth-century church of S. Giuseppe, and Marina Lunga, the widest port.
The presence of pumice, which is extracted from the quarries present on the island, characterizes many local coastlines.  Primarily between the “Punta Castagna” and the “Capo Rosso,” the coastline is characterized by intense white and sometimes dazzling pumice powder that renders wonderful coastal waters with colours that vary from turquoise to deep blue.
August 24th is the festival of San Bartolomeo with fireworks visible from all of the Aeolian Islands.  Particularly attractive for tourist is a boat tour to admire savage sites, large bays, and marvellous sea depths.
The typical traditional boat (gozzo) of Lipari is used to reach the furthest beaches on the island, or to reach in a short time the nearby islands of Vulcano and Salina, and also for fishing (primarily for squid).
The historical importance of Lipari is attested with the remains of a Greek acropolis, a Norman Cathedral and Castle, which are sites of notable interest that are worthwhile to visit along with the Aeolian Archaeological Museum.  The museum is surrounded by an antic Spanish wall erected in the fifteenth-century that also shelters buildings, subdivided in sections that reconstruct the Aeolian history from prehistory, thanks to excavated sites in the Aeolian Islands.
Finally, the following sites are highly recommended:
Pianoconte, the hot springs of San Calogero, Quattropani, Mt. Sant’Angelo, Mt. Chirica, Canneto, Pirrera, Mt. Rosa, Guardia and Giardina, Capistello, and the belvedere of Quattrocchi.
